No Soy. No Corn. No GMOs. What Does That Actually Mean for Your Dog?

3 min read By Kristina Voltin

These days, nearly every premium dog food brand puts "no soy, no corn, no GMO" somewhere on their packaging. It sounds good. But what does it actually mean — for your dog's health, specifically?

More than most pet food marketing would have you believe. Here's the breakdown.

Why No Soy

Soy is a common cheap protein filler in dog food — but it's one of the most problematic ingredients for many dogs. Here's why it matters:

  • Soy is a common allergen. It's in the top tier of food triggers for dogs with sensitivities, alongside corn, wheat, and dairy. Chronic exposure can lead to skin issues, GI inflammation, and immune overreaction.
  • Soy contains phytoestrogens — plant-based compounds that can mimic estrogen in the body. The long-term endocrine effects of regular soy consumption in dogs are still being studied, but the precautionary case for avoiding it is solid.
  • Soy is almost always GMO. Over 90% of US soy is genetically modified. Even "non-GMO" soy brings the allergy and phytoestrogen concerns.
  • Soy is used to inflate protein percentages cheaply — it makes the "crude protein" number on the label look higher without providing the bioavailable animal protein dogs actually need.

Why No Corn

Corn shows up in dog food as corn, corn meal, corn gluten meal, or corn syrup — all cheap calorie sources that dogs are not biologically equipped to process efficiently.

  • Corn is not species-appropriate. Dogs are facultative carnivores — their digestive systems are optimized for animal protein, not grain starch. Corn-based calories are processed less efficiently and stored as fat more readily than protein-based calories.
  • Corn is a top allergen. Corn sensitivity is extremely common in dogs, particularly those who've been on corn-heavy kibble for years.
  • Corn provides empty calories. It fills the bowl and the belly without contributing meaningful nutrition. It's a filler — literally.
  • Corn is almost entirely GMO. Over 92% of US corn is genetically modified.

Why No GMOs

The debate about GMOs in human food is ongoing. In dog food, the case for avoiding them is more straightforward: most GMO crops are engineered to be herbicide-resistant, meaning they're grown with heavy applications of glyphosate and other herbicides. Residues of these chemicals end up in the food supply.

The long-term effects of chronic low-level glyphosate exposure on canine gut health are not fully established — but the gut microbiome is highly sensitive to herbicide residues, and there are good reasons to avoid unnecessary exposure.

At Loyal Saints, "no GMOs" means we source ingredients from non-GMO supply chains, verified through our supplier relationships and production documentation.

What "No Additives" Means

Artificial additives in dog food serve one purpose: to extend shelf life and maintain appearance. The most common ones — BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin — are petroleum-derived preservatives that have been linked to liver dysfunction, immune disruption, and carcinogenicity in animal studies.

Loyal Saints uses no artificial preservatives. The freeze-drying process itself creates a shelf-stable product without chemical assistance. Unopened bags last up to 2 years without a single preservative added.

What You're Choosing Instead

When you choose a food with no soy, no corn, no GMOs, and no additives — you're not just removing bad things. You're making room for what your dog's body actually needs:

  • Bioavailable animal protein from identifiable whole sources
  • Natural fats with intact omega profiles
  • Real vitamins and minerals in their native form, not synthetic replacements
  • A gut microbiome that's supported, not undermined, by every meal

That's what Loyal Saints is. Every formula. Every bag. Every time.
