The compounding part

Will better food lower my vet bills?
No food can promise that and we will not. What the evidence supports is narrower and still useful: bodyweight is the most modifiable risk factor in dogs, dogs kept lean lived a median 1.8 years longer and reached chronic illness 2.1 years later, and staying lean is a portioning problem.
Do treats matter?
More than owners expect. For many dogs treats are a larger share of daily calories than they are credited with, and any portioning plan that ignores them measures one input carefully and another not at all.
Is pet insurance a better use of the money?
They do different jobs. Insurance limits what a bad outcome costs; body condition changes how likely it is. Neither replaces the other, and the cheapest of the two is the food you were buying anyway.
