What a senior dog costs, and what moves that number

Most of a dog's lifetime veterinary spend happens in the last third of its life. Which means the years you are paying for at ten were largely decided at three.

• Complete meal: 2.9 cups a day — about $13.37, and a 14 oz bag lasts 2.7 days
• Quarter bowl: 0.72 cups a day — about $3.34, and a bag lasts 10.8 days

Digestibility is the number nobody prints

Two foods can show identical protein on the guaranteed analysis and deliver very different amounts to the dog, because analysis measures what went in rather than what was absorbed. Stool volume is the crude proxy every owner already has.

Anesthesia is the hidden multiplier

A great many veterinary procedures require it, and its cost scales with bodyweight. A dental clean on a giant breed and on a terrier are the same procedure at very different prices, before anything is actually found.

Four in ten dogs are already carrying it

Around 40% of dogs are overweight. It is the most common health finding in companion dogs and the most modifiable one — there is no genetic test, no procedure, and no prescription involved. It is decided in the bowl, twice a day.
