These days, nearly every premium dog food brand puts "no soy, no corn, no GMO" somewhere on their packaging. It sounds good. But what does it actually mean — for your dog's health, specifically?
More than most pet food marketing would have you believe. Here's the breakdown.
Why No Soy
Soy is a common cheap protein filler in dog food — but it's one of the most problematic ingredients for many dogs. Here's why it matters:
- Soy is a common allergen. It's in the top tier of food triggers for dogs with sensitivities, alongside corn, wheat, and dairy. Chronic exposure can lead to skin issues, GI inflammation, and immune overreaction.
- Soy contains phytoestrogens — plant-based compounds that can mimic estrogen in the body. The long-term endocrine effects of regular soy consumption in dogs are still being studied, but the precautionary case for avoiding it is solid.
- Soy is almost always GMO. Over 90% of US soy is genetically modified. Even "non-GMO" soy brings the allergy and phytoestrogen concerns.
