Pick up a cup of Loyal Saints and a cup of kibble and the second one is noticeably heavier. That is not a defect and it is not a trick — it is the entire point of freeze-drying, and it is the single most useful thing to understand before you judge what this food costs.
The two numbers
A cup of Loyal Saints Beef weighs 50.9 grams and carries 230 calories.
A cup of Purina Pro Plan Adult Weight Management Chicken & Rice weighs 101 grams and carries 355 calories. Those are their figures, not ours: the bag states that a standard 8 oz measuring cup holds approximately 101 g, at a calorie content of 3,516 kcal/kg.
So yes — a cup of kibble holds more calories. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and any brand that tells you their cup beats a kibble cup on calories is either using a different cup or hoping you will not check.
But that cup also weighs twice as much. The cup is measuring two completely different amounts of food.
Per gram, the picture inverts
Divide it out:
- Loyal Saints Beef: 230 kcal ÷ 50.9 g = 4.52 kcal per gram
- Pro Plan Adult Weight Management: 355 kcal ÷ 101 g = 3.51 kcal per gram
That is roughly 29% more energy in every gram. Same food, opposite conclusion, purely because we changed the unit.
Why the difference exists
Raw meat is somewhere around three-quarters water by weight. Freeze-drying removes that water by freezing the food solid and then dropping the surrounding pressure so the ice turns straight to vapour without ever becoming liquid — a process called sublimation. The food never gets hot, which is why the protein is not denatured the way it is in a kibble extruder running at high heat and pressure.
What is left behind is a piece of meat with its internal structure intact and its water gone. Light, porous, and concentrated. A bag of it looks like far less food than it is.
Why cups persist anyway
If cups are such a poor unit, why does every brand use them? Because you already own one. Feeding instructions have to be followable in a kitchen at seven in the morning, and “108 grams” requires a scale that most households do not keep for the dog.
Cups are a usability decision, not an accuracy one. They work fine for feeding a single food consistently. They fall apart the moment you use them to compare two foods, which is exactly when most people reach for them.
How to compare any two bags in a minute
- Find kcal per kilogram on both bags. It is weight-based and comparable. It is usually printed smallest.
- Divide by 1,000 to get calories per gram.
- Compare those two numbers. That is the real answer.
If a bag only prints calories per cup, look for the grams-per-cup figure alongside it — most brands publish it somewhere, and if a brand will not tell you what its cup weighs, that is itself informative.
What this means for your bowl
Two practical consequences follow, and they pull in opposite directions.
The first is that a small scoop is not a small meal. A quarter cup of a food this dense is doing the work of a considerably larger scoop of something diluted. People routinely overfeed freeze-dried in the first week because the correct amount looks stingy.
The second is that for a large dog, fed as the complete diet, this food goes fast. A 50 lb dog eats about 3½ cups a day, which is most of a 14 oz bag every two days. That is a real cost and we would rather say it plainly — the answer to it is the quarter-bowl rule, not a smaller scoop.

Common questions
Is more calories per cup better?
No. It tells you how concentrated the food is by volume, not how good it is. A weight-management kibble and a working-dog formula can differ enormously in calories per cup with no relationship to ingredient quality.
Does removing the water remove nutrition?
Water is not a nutrient your dog needs from food — it comes from the bowl. Freeze-drying at low temperature keeps protein, fat and micronutrients essentially intact, which is why the process is used for pharmaceuticals and lab samples where degradation is unacceptable.
How many cups are in a 14 oz bag?
About 7.8 cups of Beef. Because it is filled to weight rather than to volume, that figure is stable even though the bag settles in transit.
Why does the guaranteed analysis look so high?
