“No fillers” appears on almost every premium bag, which makes it close to meaningless as a claim. There is no regulatory definition of a filler, so nobody is lying when they print it — and nobody is telling you much either.
It is worth knowing what it is supposed to mean and how to check it yourself, on any bag, including ours.
What a filler actually is
A filler is an ingredient that adds bulk and calories without contributing much your dog can use. Corn, wheat and soy are the usual named suspects, but naming ingredients is the weaker test. The better one is structural: what is this ingredient doing in the recipe, and how much of the food is it?
A small amount of a grain in an otherwise meat-dense food is not a filler. A plant protein concentrate propping up the protein percentage so the bag can advertise a bigger number is, whatever it is called.
The ninety-second check
1. Read the first five ingredients. They are listed by weight before cooking, and they are most of the food. If a grain or a plant protein concentrate appears there, it is doing structural work.
2. Look for ingredient splitting. This is the one that catches people. If a label lists “ground corn”, “corn gluten meal” and “corn bran” as three separate entries, each lands lower on the list than the corn would if it were combined — possibly low enough to push chicken into first place. The label is accurate. The impression is not. Mentally recombine anything sharing a root word before you read the order.
3. Understand what “meal” means. “Chicken” is weighed wet, with its water. “Chicken meal” is already rendered and dried, so a lower position can still represent more actual protein. Neither is automatically worse. What matters is whether the animal is named: “chicken meal” tells you what it was, “meat and bone meal” does not.
4. Find the synthetic premix. Scan the end of the list for a long tail of vitamins and minerals in chemical form. That tail means the recipe could not deliver those nutrients from its ingredients and had to add them back afterwards. It is not dangerous. It does tell you the food was formulated to hit a spec rather than built from ingredients that already met it.
5. Check moisture before you judge protein. Guaranteed analysis is printed “as fed”, so a 10%-moisture food and a 75%-moisture food cannot have their protein percentages compared directly at all. Divide protein by dry matter to compare fairly — the method is in how to read a calorie panel.
A worked example of splitting
Consider a label reading: chicken, ground corn, corn gluten meal, chicken fat, corn bran. Chicken looks like the primary ingredient.
Now recombine the corn. If those three corn fractions together outweigh the chicken — and after the chicken's water cooks off, they very often do — then corn is the primary ingredient and the first line was doing a lot of work. Nothing on that label is false.
Where we land

The part nobody mentions
Fillers show up in the yard. Ingredients a dog cannot absorb pass through, which is why stool volume is one of the fastest and least scientific-sounding indicators of how much of a food is actually being used. It is not a formal measure of digestibility, but it is free, it needs no equipment, and most people notice the difference inside a fortnight.
Common questions
Are grains always bad for dogs?
No. Most dogs digest cooked grains perfectly well, and grain-free is not automatically healthier. The question is proportion and purpose, not the presence of a grain.
Is “human-grade” a real standard?
Yes, and it is stricter than most people assume: every ingredient must be edible for people and the food must be made in a facility licensed to produce human food. It is a legally meaningful term, unlike “premium” or “natural”.
Why do so many foods need a synthetic premix?
High-heat processing destroys some vitamins, so they have to be replaced afterwards to meet the nutritional profile. Low-temperature processes lose less and therefore need to add back less.
Does no fillers mean fewer calories?
Usually the opposite. Remove low-value bulk and what remains is more concentrated, which is why portion sizes for dense foods look surprisingly small.
