Feeding a large dog freeze-dried raw: the quarter-bowl standard

If you have a big dog and you have priced freeze-dried raw, you have probably done the math on a full bowl and winced. There is a better way to do it.

The quarter-bowl standard. Make Loyal Saints at least 20–25% of your dog’s bowl, swapped in for the same share of what they eat now. For an 80 lb dog that is 1¼ cups a day — $5.77, about $175.39 a month. Raw muscle meat, organs and fish-oil omega-3s go into every meal, not just the occasional one.

Why freeze-dried belongs in the bowl. In a 2024 controlled feeding study, adult dogs digested 94% of the protein in a freeze-dried raw diet against 82% in an extruded kibble — and produced less than half the stool (Geary et al., Translational Animal Science).

What an all-kibble bowl misses. Every meal has been cooked under high heat and pressure, many kibbles get a large share of their calories from starch, and there is no raw muscle meat or organ in the bowl at all. Across 67 commercial pet foods, extruded dry dog foods had on average about 13% of their lysine — an essential amino acid — damaged by processing heat, and up to 23% in some (van Rooijen et al., Journal of Nutritional Science, 2014). Freeze-drying has no cooking step.

You can feed a large dog entirely on Loyal Saints — it is complete and balanced for All Life Stages (for a large-breed puppy, choose Beef or Chicken). An 80 lb dog would eat 5 cups a day, about $701.54 a month. Some owners do; for most, the quarter bowl is the smarter buy.

And against fresh? Fresh-cooked delivery is a real step up from kibble, but it is cooked, it needs the fridge and the freezer, and it ships on a cold-chain schedule. In the same 2024 study, the freeze-dried raw diet also out-digested the fresh diet on protein (94% against 86%). Freeze-dried raw is never cooked and lives in the pantry.

The Fluff Factor. A cup measures space, not weight. A cup of Loyal Saints Beef weighs about 51 g — a cup of dense kibble often weighs twice that — because the water is gone and what is left is light and airy. Big on volume, dense on nutrition: gram for gram it carries about 4.5 calories. Why cup-for-cup comparisons mislead.

Why at least a fifth? Below that, freeze-dried is a garnish — it makes the bowl look better and changes little about what is in it. And the familiar 2–3%-of-body-weight rule does not apply here. That describes fresh raw, which is mostly water. Applied to a freeze-dried bag it would badly overfeed your dog.
